EMERGENCY INFORMATION

To report an emergency at one of our schools or facilities, please call 206.631.7600.

Snow, windstorms, earthquakes and power failures can cause disruptions for schools and families. During these difficult times, Highline Public Schools will do all it can to communicate vital information to parents and students. When emergency conditions result in school schedule changes, the district will use one of the following plans. Be sure to keep this information handy to help you understand the brief notifications you will hear over radio and television. Our top priority is the safety of students.

Always check Highline Public Schools homepage for Emergency Alert notices.

Remember:

Announcements apply for that day only. When “LIMITED BUS TRANSPORTATION” is in effect, emergency bus stops will be used in both morning and afternoon unless a “change” announcement is made for the afternoon. If Highline Public Schools is not mentioned, then schools and buses will be operating normally.

You may access a report, and register to receive email alerts, via the Internet at: www.schoolreport.org. SchoolReport.org offers instant cell phone text messaging and email messaging.

Bulletins will also be announced on local radio and television stations. Radio is typically updated more often that TV reports. You are urged to continue listening throughout the day for possible changes which may necessitate sending students home early.

Please check radio, TV, the district website, and www.schoolreport.org for the latest information, rather than phoning your school or district offices. It is very difficult for staff to handle a high volume of calls in emergency situations. Thank you for your cooperation.

If Highline schools are affected, announcements will state one of the following conditions:

1. “HIGHLINE SCHOOLS – LIMITED BUS TRANSPORTATION”
The “Emergency Bus Stops” will be in effect. Schools will be open at their regularly scheduled time UNLESS the message includes “Two Hours Late”.

2. " HIGHLINE SCHOOLS – TWO HOURS LATE”
This means buses will begin their first route two hours late but at regularly scheduled stops UNLESS the message includes “LIMITED BUS TRANSPORTATION”. If there is a two-hour emergency late start, there will be no breakfast, no morning classes for preschool, kindergarten, ECEAP or PSSC, and no early release, if one is scheduled for that day. Afternoon classes for preschool, kindergarten, ECEAP and PSSC will be on time. If it is an early release Friday, the scheduled Kindergarten session will attend the extended session and be dismissed with the rest of the school. Schools will be dismissed at their regular times.

3. “HIGHLINE SCHOOLS CLOSED”
This means that all Highline schools are closed for ALL regular and/or Special Programs students, and NO transportation will be provided to other schools outside of our district even though they may be open for instruction that day. All scheduled activities and athletics are also canceled. District administrative offices will be open and administrators are expected to report to work as soon as safely possible. Employees should refer to the Human Resources memo on who is to report to work when there is a change in schedule or school closure.

4.“HIGHLINE SCHOOLS CLOSED – INCLUDING ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES”
This means that all Highline schools including administrative offices are closed. No transportation will be provided to schools outside of our district. No employees will be expected to report to work, unless specifically notified by their supervisors.

When schools are CLOSED in the Highline School District, ALL meetings and activities and athletics scheduled in school buildings for the entire day are canceled or postponed. If travel conditions become hazardous after school has been dismissed, cancellation of evening meetings and activities will be announced on radio and TV stations and at www.schoolreport.org.

Develop a Family Emergency Plan

Each family should have a plan covering what to do when children arrive home early due to an emergency situation. Situations which should be covered include:

  • Are the students prepared with warm clothing, including gloves, hats and boots?
  • What is the best route home if your student cannot be delivered to the normal bus stop?
  • Where could they go if they needed help?
  • Who would care for him or her until you arrive?
  • Is there someone your child could call to allay fears?
