Highline Teacher Highlighted in
Documentary with Zuckerberg and Gates
Film features tech industry innovators
Burien, WA
– Mount View
Elementary teacher Jamie Ewing is featured along with innovators like Mark
Zuckerberg and Bill Gates in a short documentary film promoting the teaching of
computer programming to students. The film
shows Ewing’s fifth grade students learning computer programming skills and
touts Ewing’s classroom as a model for schools across the country.
In the film,
Ewing says programming "builds critical thinking, builds problem solving,
and it’s something [students] can apply to math or reading skills. We
integrated science with programming, and I saw [science test scores] go up by
30 percent."
In addition
to interviews with Zuckerberg and Gates, the film features the founders of
Twitter, Dropbox and other technology innovators, as well as recording artist
Will.i.am.
The film was
produced by technology entrepreneur Hadi Partova, an early investor in Facebook
and Dropbox. Partova recently founded Code.org, a non-profit foundation dedicated to
promoting computer programming education.
Last year,
Ewing was one of 16 educators in the nation honored by Microsoft for inspiring
student learning and impacting positive change through classroom technology.
