Mission

Our mission is to provide the students and families high-quality learning options in creative academic structures that are personalized and flexible to meet the needs of every child and family.

Principal

Welcome to Highline Public Schools Alternative Programs

Our schools and programs are high-quality educational options supporting the Highline Public Schools' portfolio of secondary schools. My staff and I are committed to developing small and personalized learning communities that are committed to your child’s educational experiences. Each program is fully accredited with highly qualified teachers and service-oriented adults meeting the individual learning needs of all our students. While our schools and programs serve well over four hundred students each year, no single learning community in Alternative programs has more than two hundred students enrolled. This makes for close knit and supportive school environments where every teacher and counselor knows every student, and family, by Name, Strength and Need, as promised by our superintendent and school board.

Our alternative schools and programs serve families with a wide range of special needs and high expectations for the schools that their children attend. Our standards for learning and effective instruction teaching make our schools top notch in ability to provide for those in transition, learning English, or requiring special individualized education services. From online to home schooling support, and progressive parent partnerships, we serve families who need flexibility, specialized instruction, a strong parent and family community, or even credit recovery and reengagement or in transition returning to school for those who have been out of school.

Each of our programs is a school of choice in our district and accessible for families across Highline Public Schools. Our Schools and Programs include:

Highline CHOICE Academy – a 7th through 12th grade high performing parent partnership with direct connections to college through Running Start and Career through Puget Sound Skills Center. A Washington State School of Distinction “CHOICE is the best kept secret in Highline.” - Parent

New Start High School – A small, smart high school serving less than two hundred students in grades 10-12 looking for a less comprehensive school experience. Ideal for credit recovery and school reengagement. “Our students are inspiring and graduation day is amazing!” - Student

Highline Home School Center – A district facilitated, family-based cooperative offering a resource center, parent and teacher taught classes, transcript and portfolio guidance, connecting the home school community to college and post secondary experiences. “Highline supports family-centered Education” - A home-schooling father

Career Link – Serves over a hundred older students toward a quality high school completion and graduation with scholarships and direct connections to community college. In partnership with and located at South Seattle Community College. Also a Washington State Achievement Award Winner.

Gateway to College – Premier college connection and graduation opportunity for reengaging students who have been out of school for various reasons. In partnership with and located on the Highline Community College Campus.

Southwest Youth and Family Services Education Center – A small personalized school re-engagement and credit recovery option for youth transitioning into their next high school.

The Highline Interim Placement Program – Online programming and learning opportunities in a highly personalized setting for those currently out of school seeking transition or placement into their neighborhood, or next high school. Affectionately called HIPP, this is an interim placement program available only with administrative or counseling referral.

We believe in all of our students' ability to achieve and excel in their schooling. Our aim is to get every graduate into a quality college or career training opportunity immediately after they receive a diploma. In Highline Alternative Programs we connect with each of our students through personalized college and career counseling and advisement using a state approved curriculum. Our college and career connection center oversees a comprehensive counseling and preparation program for life after high school, attending to every child in our schools.

Family engagement and partnership is encouraged and invited by each of our programs and schools. We involve community and shared resources to enrich and enhance the school experience for all the children we teach. Please contact myself, the teachers in programs or our school counselors to see how you can be involved and join us supporting the students of Highline Alternative Programs.
