Parent Academy: Help Your Student Plan Beyond High School
Eight Weeks: February 2, 9, 16, 23, March 2, 9, 16, 23
What Night? One time per week from 6:00-7:30 p.m. on Thursday nights
The Parent Academy will be an 8-week academy held once a week for 90 minutes in the evenings at Cascade Middle School.  It will be facilitated in both English and Spanish by outside facilitators as well as occasional guest speakers. All of the workshops will be focused around four major themes, each tied to the vision that all students are academically, socially, and financially prepared to enter and complete the postsecondary program or institution of their choice.
The Parent Academy will be built off of the Éxito Escolar curriculum which is an exciting multimedia college access curriculum focused around a series of bilingual films and activities. The goal of this program is to prepare families of students grades 7-12 for post-secondary education. The curriculum builds off the collection of films which follow the experiences of students and their families as they explore life beyond high school. These highly engaging films are created in the style of popular Spanish-language telenovelas. The curriculum consists of an eight module comprehensive college access curriculum designed to inform and motivate first generation college-bound students including a facilitator's manual, PowerPoint presentations, and a parent workbook.

The four themes are: benefits of postsecondary education, financial literacy and planning, family and cultural influences, navigating systems and resources, and articulating a postsecondary plan.

The curriculum topics are:

  1. Why Continue Education? - The importance of postsecondary education
  2. Postsecondary Readiness - High School Preparation and Course Planning
  3. Navigating Systems - How to access resources in your child’s school
  4. College Entrance Exams - Tools and tips to prepare your student
  5. Financial Future Planning - Financial literacy around college access
  6. Financial Aid Options for Postsecondary Education - FAFSA/WASFA
  7. Postsecondary Options - Career Exploration and Selecting A College
  8. Completing College Applications - Step by Step Planning
