Principal

  • Dear Madrona Community,

Kellie Hernandez It is with great anticipation that I begin my second year as Principal of Madrona! The 2016-2017 school year was spent learning and getting to know the Madrona community. As we begin the 2017-2018 school year, we will be joined by our new Assistant Principal, Jessica Ma. Mrs. Ma comes to us with strong literacy, technology and English Language Learning skills. We are thrilled to have her join our team!

At Madrona we have three guidelines that we focus on to provide a safe learning environment for each student. The personal standards we emphasize are 1) Show Respect 2) Make Good Decisions and 3) Solve Problems. We will teach these standards alongside RULER which is an evidence-based approach for integrating social and emotional learning. RULER is an acronym that stands for Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing and Regulating emotions. We are very excited to extend this learning to families as well!

In addition to our emphasis on social and emotional learning, we have developed goals in the area of academic success for all students. We are so lucky to have dedicated, hard-working, and highly skilled professionals at Madrona. Our focus on Mathematics and Literacy center on instruction that targets the Common Core State Standards. Teachers work collaboratively to plan lessons and assessments that align with the standards to help students reach mastery.

Another area of focus for the 2017-2018 school year is attendance. Academic achievement and attendance are directly related to each other. Having students at school each and every day is so important! We will have awards throughout the year to celebrate classes with the highest attendance rates!

Please feel free to reach out to me at any time with questions, comments, or concerns you might have!

    Kellie Hernandez

  • Share Feedback on Later Start Times

We are making plans to change to a later start time for high schools. This is in response to feedback from students, families and staff, as well as research that shows teenagers do better in school when they can sleep later.
