    We are proud to continue our work at Midway towards our vision: At Midway, staff, students, and families have high standards and foster excellence by providing an equitable education for all in order to cultivate a community of lifelong learners.

    As we work to cultivate a community of lifelong learners, we focus our work around standards based instruction, family engagement, social emotional learning, culturally responsive teaching, and integrating technology into students’ learning experiences.  We continue to build on our successes and focus on areas of growth.  As we focus on creating independent learners with a growth mindset, we are working to ensure that all students are clear about their learning goals and what they need to do to be successful.

    This year, we are continuing to focus on developing academic vocabulary, while diving into teaching all students to use a close reading strategy to deepen comprehension of complex texts. Our goal is that:  Students will independently use a close reading strategy to access, interpret, and comprehend complex texts. Students will give the rational for what they are doing, why they are doing it, and how they will do it. Through a close reading strategy, students will be able to interpret a complex task and present the information to an identified audience.

    We continue to start every month with Family Art Friday, a great community building activity that brings families into the classroom to create art with their children.  We also have had other great opportunities for families to join students, as a part of learning community, such as Family Read Ins and Multicultural Night.  We love having families as a part of our community and are looking forward to hearing from families about how we can improve our partnership. Please join us monthly for, Coffee with the Principal, to learn more about our programs and provide feedback about how we can improve.  Our goal is to ensure that all families feel welcome, valued, and heard.  

    We value our student and family’s input and feel that student voice is a critical piece of our school.  Each month, 6th grade leaders lead our PBIS assemblies to recognize two students from each class, who have been selected for demonstrating our characteristic of the month.  In order to support our students with social emotional learning, we have school-wide common area expectations in alignment with a focus on being safe, respectful, and responsible.  We are also implementing RULER (teaching students to use the mood meter to recognize, understand, label, express, and regulate their emotions) and Second Step lessons to teach students empathy, problem-solving, and other social emotional skills.  

    We continue to be proud to offer all of our 3rd-6th graders their own assigned Google Chromebook, allowing students to incorporate technology throughout their day.  We also have great community partnerships that support all of our work, including Seattle Art Museum (SAM), who support professional development, field trips, and art experiences for our students and families and Des Moines Police Department and Wesley Homes, who provide weekly Reading Buddy time to our students.  We also have an incredible Montessori preschool located at Wesley Homes.

    We are in the process of redesigning our website. Our new site will be easier to navigate, accessible to users with disabilities and will require less staff time to create and manage content. We now need your feedback to figure out what you need and expect from the new Highline website.

  • Highline Levy Passing

    It appears our levy measure will pass, with early results showing more than 58% voting in favor of renewal. “I am grateful to voters for their support of our students and schools. Local funding for our schools is critical,” said Superintendent Susan Enfield.
