  • Mastering 2 Languages in Middle School

Nearly a decade ago, Highline launched an innovative program for students to master two languages in school. The Dual Language program transformed the school day for dozens of children, who spend half their day learning in English and half their day learning in Spanish.

Principal

Libby DeBell

Dear Cascade Community,

We have had another wonderful year of growth and achievement at Cascade! Thank you to all of our staff, students, families, and community partners for coming together to support our amazing students on their pathway to college.

 Proud Highlights from 2015-16

  • Cascade had the highest performance of all middle schools in Highline on the Science MSP. We grew from 38% in 2015 to 65% in 2016!
  • Cascade had the highest growth of middle schools on the Math Highline Benchmark Assessment. From fall to spring, our 7th graders improved by 21%, and 8th graders by 22%.
  • Students with disabilities showed significant improvement through our inclusion program, increasing proficiency on math benchmarks from 4% to 32% in 7th grade, and 3% to 48% in 8th grade!
  • 75% of our 8th graders are reading on or above grade level, up from 50% upon entering Cascade last year.
  • 100% of our 8th graders signed up for the College Bound scholarship.
  • Many students participated in after school sports and clubs.
  • Prevention Team involved 40 students in regular volunteer activities in the community.
  • We added 30 students to our AVID program, and band and choir classes participated in local competitions.
  • All students were part of academies and advisories, increasing their sense of belonging at school.
  • We increased attendance at Student Led Conferences from 75 to 300 families this year.
  • We continued our partnerships with Navos, SWYFS, Boys and Girls Club, Consejo, White Center Food Bank, White Center CDA, White Center Public Library, White Center Promise, Union Gospel Mission, Treehouse, Northwest Harvest, World Vision, Seola Gardens, College Success Foundation, Atlantic Street, Neighborhood House, Techbridge, The Pacific Science Center, and PSESD.

This year at Cascade, we are exploring a new motto as part of our vision:

Strength in Diversity

Power from Community

Opportunity through Excellence

Strength in Diversity

We believe the diversity of our student body is a huge strength. Our students come from many different cultures and speak almost 30 different languages. We grow by learning alongside others who have different perspectives and experiences.

Power from Community

We are better, together. We are more powerful when we include the voices and contributions of our families and community partners. As a community, we have shared hopes and goals for our students.

Opportunity through Excellence

It is our ultimate goal to close the opportunity gap so all of our students are academically successful in school and have access to the college and career of their choice. This starts with academic excellence at Cascade.

Exciting Plans for 2016-17

  • Engage in Culturally Responsive Instruction – Teachers will engage in deep professional development to learn how to develop relationships and positive school climate that is responsive and respectful to the diversity of our students, who come from many backgrounds, races, and cultures
  • Strengthen Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports – Design new lessons to teach and reinforce expectations across the school; begin Cougar Pride assemblies with featured monthly values and student awards; begin monthly Fun Fridays to recognize students who are on track behaviorally
  • Expand after school programming – Continue partnerships with our amazing after school programs and add even more unique offerings for our students
  • Increase our fitness and electives offerings – Students will once again have full year PE and Health, as well as full year electives. We are excited to add visual arts.
  •  Continue blended learning – This year, students will take their own Chromebooks home in the first month of school, and will be expected to bring them to school each day as a learning tool that helps us differentiate instruction for the needs of each student.
  • Expand dual language programming – 75 incoming 7th graders will join the Dual Language program in its second year. They will take math, social studies, and advisory in Spanish.
  • Continue academies and advisory, which create small learning communities within our school, enabling us to know each student by name, strength, and need.
  •  Increase family and community engagement - We are currently seeking community and family volunteers to get involved at Cascade. There are many opportunities, including popping popcorn on Fridays at lunch, helping teachers in classrooms, or attending monthly Coffee with the Principal to be part of creating shared plans. Please contact our office manager, Jeni White, at jeni.white@highlineschools.org or 631-5500 to sign up!

In partnership,

Libby DeBell

  • Supporting Immigrant Students

We recognize that actions taken by the White House, including a new executive order restricting immigration and orders to increase immigration enforcement, are unsettling to many of our families. We want to reiterate our commitment to our students’ safety. We will do everything in our power to keep our students safe at school.
