  • As the principal of Hazel Valley, I take great pride in leading the students, the staff and the families of this community towards pic ensuring that every student will leave Hazel Valley prepared for college, career and citizenship.  Daily, I value the opportunity to have meaningful, inspiring and academically engaging conversations and interactions with children, teachers and families. My goal for Hazel Valley is to support each and every child to become resourceful, considerate, curious, problem solvers who are ready for the world we live in.  To do this, some of our 2017-2018 goals for the year include: 

    • Equitable access to rigorous, standards based instruction
      • Teachers will align high expectations, content, resources, assessments and instruction to Common Core State Standards to ensure there is equitable access to all students.
      • Teachers will use multiple assessments and data-driven instruction to engage and communicate with students about their progress towards standards mastery. 
      • Teachers adapt lessons and content in response to student voice, cultural diversity, and learning needs. 
    • Build strong partnerships with families and community
      • Continue to provide events for families to learn more about our programs through monthly coffee chat with the principal as well as evening family events. 
      • Implement Winter/Spring evening conferences for families to meet with teachers to discuss student progress and learn ways to support student at home.
      • Provide Family Outreach once a month through phone calls, website pages and home visits pic2
    • Social-Emotional Learning and knowing every student by name, strength, and need
      • We will continue to strengthen our work within RULER (Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing, and Regulating Emotions) to enhance our Positive Behavior and Intervention Supports (PBIS) to improve students’ academic performance and social skills, and support classrooms to be more supportive and student centered.
      • The Ruler approach includes using:  classroom charters, the mood meter, meta moment and blue print. We will also be implementing a “feeling words” curriculum.
    • Culturally responsive organization
      • Continue to have monthly meetings to look at student data (academic & behavioral) to celebrate successes and make adjustments/plan next steps to meet student needs and improve student achievements.
      • Develop and review equitable practices amongst our school to ensure all students reach their highest potential.

    During the course of the 2017-2018 school year, our Hazel Valley staff will be focusing on ensuring that your child is receiving a strong instructional program that is rigorous while meeting your child's learning needs. One of the most important ways you can be involved as a parent is knowing that you are your child's first teacher.  We want to continue to build a strong, two-way partnership with you and look forward to hearing from you about how we can best meet the needs of your child.
