     Principal Message                   

    We are looking forward to another great year at Midway Elementary! We are a richly diverse learning community that celebrates the many backgrounds our students bring to our school. Midway proudly partners with our families and community in a variety of events that take place throughout the year. This includes our Montessori Program, PTA events, Midway Mustang Mornings and Parent Academies. 

    Enrichment opportunities are also an important component of our students’ learning experience. We are entering into another year of partnership with Seattle Art Museum (SAM). We are also lucky to have our friends from Des Moines Police Department and Wesley Homes who provide weekly Reading Buddy time to our students. Our partnerships are valuable to our learning community as they provide our families with extension opportunities. 

    At Midway, we believe in serving the whole child. This includes the physical, social and emotional well being of our students. This year we will develop our RULER (Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing, Regulating Emotions) program to foster Social Emotional Learning (SEL) for our students and staff. This will help to support our students social, emotional and behavioral needs. We will also implement Second Step in all classrooms. This program provides students with research based social skills. 

    Our unique school model integrates technology into core content throughout the instructional day using a blended learning model. Adaptive technology programs are used to personalize learning for our students by meeting their learning needs at their individual levels. Midway Elementary’s 3rd-6th grade students are 1:1, meaning each student has their own assigned Google Chromebook. Our K-2 students use a 2:1 model using ipads and Chromebooks. Some of our programs include Lexia, MyOn Reflex Math and Think Through Math. 

    Our blended learning model has continued to be recognized as a site visit for neighboring districts. We have hosted district teams to share the ongoing work that our staff implements and works to find success using a station rotation model.

    We are launching an online conversation to get your input on how to support the social and emotional well-being of students. Your ideas will be used as we renew our strategic plan, which will guide our work in schools for the next five years.

    Four years, 11 students, countless challenges and one big, bold goal are at the center of a new documentary set in Highline Public Schools. "Eleven Paths" follows 11 Highline students from freshman through senior year of high school. You can view this compelling film and a Q & A panel with the students featured in it online.
