Policy 2185 - EARLY LEARNING

It is the goal of the Board to ensure quality early learning services (pre-kindergarten services) that prepare children for success in kindergarten and beyond. Research indicates that early intervention prevents future learning difficulties in school. To meet this goal, the district will create partnerships with parents, community members, and public and private organizations to provide comprehensive, sustainable, and accessible early learning services. Each early learning program will identify measurable student outcomes.

Current early learning services include:

  • Head Start – federal-funded early child assistance program for low-income and at-risk children;
  • Early Childhood Educational Assistance Program (ECEAP) – state-funded Head Start program for low-income and at-risk children;
  • Early Childhood Special Education Program – services for students with disabilities – including birth to three services; and
  • White Center Early Learning Initiative – one of two demonstration community projects in Washington and part of the Thrive by Five partnership.
