Backfill Proficiency
Credit may be awarded for a course that a student has failed, and for which the student successfully completes the next higher-level course in a sequence that includes a natural progression of the state learning standards from the previous course. This also applies to courses in which a student did not earn credit for the 1st term of a year-long course, but did earn credit for the 2nd term.
Mastery-based credit is available in the courses list below if the student achieves a C or higher grade in the next-higher level course taking during the regular school year. The list below will be reviewed and updated annually by a committee led by the superintendent's designee, to include staff with content-specific expertise.
Following each grade reporting period, student grades will be analyzed from the previous 12 months by a central office team and updated in the student information system to reflect credit earned through backfill proficiency; in most cases the “No Credit” grade from the previous semester will be changed to the grade earned (A, B, or C) from the qualifying class, and documented as a grade change.
For courses not on the list below, a school can elect to process a standard grade change form if a student has demonstrated proficiency in a course they have failed through a subsequent course.
