The district discourages the use of private vehicles for transporting students before, during or after school hours for any type trips. Private vehicles may be used only if funds for other modes of transportation are not available or if in the judgement of the principal, district transportation is not warranted. Therefore, all parents/guardians and staff members are required to receive prior written approval from a school official to use private vehicles for transporting students. Such approval must be obtained by completing the "Approval of Use for Private Cars for Student Transportation" form (2320F). By signing the form, the staff member or parent/guardian warrants that she/he is at least 22 years of age, has a valid driver's license, has automobile liability insurance in force on her/his personal car for at least the minimum amounts as required by law. (See RCW 46.29.49) Staff members or parents/guardians who provide transportation for students on a regular basis on behalf of the district may be required to obtain from the Washington State Department of Licensing and provide to the district a current (issued within the last six months) abstract of their driving record. To the extent practical, the building principal or designee will ascertain that a driver is not under the influence of drugs or alcohol and that any vehicle used is appropriate and is mechanically sound and safe. The district carries an excess liability policy for insured drivers.
The parent/guardian of each student transported via private auto during field trips or other officially sanctioned activities shall sign a permission slip consenting to the use of private transportation.
The following procedures shall apply when "in lieu" transportation is used:
1. All requests for "in lieu" transportation shall be directed to the transportation department.
2. The transportation department shall distribute instructions and reimbursement claim forms for all approved requests.
3. The school shall accept claim forms on a monthly basis and verify attendance, and transmit completed claim forms to the transportation department.
4. The transportation department shall forward completed claim forms to business office.
