Hello Highline Families,
Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Education issued a letter about diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs in schools. This followed executive orders to eliminate DEI funding. Recently, a federal judge blocked most of those orders, ruling they are likely unconstitutionally vague and violate free speech.
I want to make clear that we remain committed to following the Office of Superintendent Public Instruction (OSPI) guidance and upholding both state law and our board policies.
No Changes to Highline Policies or Programs
The recent federal directives do not require us to change our policies, practices or programs. Since 1998, Washington state law has prohibited discrimination based on race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin in public education. We will continue to uphold state law and board policies.
No Immediate Impact on Federal Funding
There is no immediate risk to federal funding. While the federal directives do not give authority to freeze or remove federal funds, we recognize this is an evolving issue. We are monitoring this with OSPI and following their guidance.
Our Commitment to ALL Students
In Highline, every student is welcome, valued and safe. No federal directive will change our commitment to educational equity. We will continue to ensure all students have access to public education, regardless of their identity.
At last week’s school board meeting, a resolution was introduced that reaffirms our commitment to creating safe and welcoming schools for all students, staff, and families, regardless of background, identity, or immigration status. The board is scheduled to take action on this resolution at its next meeting on Wednesday, March 5.
What DEI Means in Highline
Diversity, equity and inclusion are not political statements. They are core values that allow us to serve every student. In Highline, DEI is about meeting the needs of our students so they can thrive.
- Diversity is the presence of differences among our students and staff. This includes race, ethnicity, gender, abilities, identity, socioeconomic background and learning styles.
- Equity means ensuring every student has the resources and support they need to succeed, recognizing that each student starts from a different place.
- Inclusion is creating an environment where every student feels valued, respected and empowered to participate fully in their education.
These values align directly with our Highline Promise—to know every student by name, strength and need, so they graduate prepared for the future they choose. Thank you for being part of the Highline community and for your shared commitment to our students.
Living the Promise,
Dr. Ivan Duran
