Building Belonging & Literacy: One Reader, One Book at a Time

Building Belonging & Literacy: One Reader, One Book at a Time

Walk into the Chinook Middle School library and you’ll feel it right away— it’s a place where students find themselves on the shelves and feel seen in the stories they read. At the center is librarian Josi Hodge.

She helps students find books that match their interests and sparks a lifelong love of reading. Book clubs, personal recommendations and one-on-one conversations all build trust and belonging.

The library isn’t quiet—it is alive with stories and exploration. Josi curates a collection that reflects diverse voices and mirrors students’ lives and identities. Her work turns the library into a space where every student is welcome, valued and safe.

“When students come in, I don’t just ask them what they want to read,” said Josi. “I ask them what they’re interested in, what they’re feeling, what they want to explore. It’s about creating connections—not just with books, but with their own voice and identity.”

This work at Chinook is a living example of Highline’s commitment to equity, inclusion and stronger literacy outcomes. Every choice, every story, helps students grow in confidence and learning.

But students tell the story best. See how the Chinook library is shaping how students read and grow.
