Every classroom has the power to shape how students see themselves and their place in the world. Across Highline, teachers are creating spaces where students feel seen, supported and that they truly belong.
This week, we celebrate Highline educators who make the promise of public education real: helping every student feel they belong, recognize their strengths and see a future full of possibility.
We’re proud to spotlight two award-winning teachers who bring this work to life every day in their classrooms.
Teacher of the Year- Mario Pilapil
At Highline High School, Mario Pilapil creates a classroom where students find a sense of belonging.
Mario’s path to teaching began as a student in Highline. Inspired by a humanities class in high school and his early experiences volunteering with younger students, he knew he wanted to become a teacher. Today, he teaches students English and brings passion into a classroom that reflects the diverse, multilingual community of Highline.
Through projects centered on identity and belonging, students explore what home means to them, both in their countries of origin and here in Highline.
Named Highline’s Teacher of the Year, Mario creates space for students to share their stories, express who they are and feel heard. In his classroom, students are reminded that their identities and experiences are not separate from learning; they are part of what makes learning meaningful.
Rookie Teacher of the Year- Betsaida Ortiz-Gonzalez
Before she ever stepped into a classroom, Betsaida Ortiz-Gonzalez was already a teacher.
Her journey began at home, where as a child she helped her dad learn English. As an English language learner herself, Betsaida understood early on that learning is about connection, confidence and having someone beside you.
Today, that same care lives on in her classroom at Hilltop Elementary School, where she is a special education teacher and creates a space where every student feels they belong and can blossom.
Named Highline’s Rookie Teacher of the Year, Betsaida brings an inclusive, relationship-driven approach to her teaching. She makes the promise of public education real by seeing each student as an individual, building trust and helping them recognize what is possible.
Watch how Betsaida is creating a classroom where students feel a true sense of belonging.
