🔬 ICYMI: Literacy Comes to Life in Science Labs
At Tyee High School, biology teacher Satprit Kaur uses science to strengthen students' reading and writing skills and expand their academic vocabulary. By reading scientific texts, writing about lab results, and explaining their thinking, students are deepening their understanding of science and building literacy skills that extend beyond the classroom. Watch how Tyee students are using literacy to make sense of science.
🗳️ What’s on the Ballot?
This November, voters in Highline will see a school levy measure on their ballots. This is a replacement levy, which renews funding from our expiring levy. It is not a new tax.
💻 Helping Students Be Safe, Responsible and Kind Online
During Digital Citizenship Week, October 20–24, we highlight how students across Highline are learning to use technology safely, responsibly, and kindly. Led by teacher librarians, lessons focus on online safety, empathy, and screen time balance. Families are invited to join in and support digital habits at home.
📚 Student Support in Action: Parkside’s Story of Growth
Schools across Highline are strengthening student support systems, and Parkside Elementary is one example of that work in action. At Parkside, the number of students in grades 2–5 needing extra phonics support dropped by half last year. This year, staff are expanding their efforts to help every student grow and thrive. Learn more about how school staff are using data to tailor student support.
💵Unlock Benefits for Your Family & School
Help Highline receive state and federal funding to help cover costs for additional staff for your school, before- and after-school programs, and resources, as well as help reduce or cover fees for athletics, ASB cards, technology, college applications and more. Every eligible form submitted means dollars for resources for our schools and benefits to families.
Plus, you may be eligible to receive SUN Bucks to help pay for groceries next summer!
📞Have You Updated Your Contact Information Yet?
This only takes a few minutes, and it makes a big difference. Each year, families must verify student emergency contact information and submit updated health information. This helps us keep students safe while at school and is essential for schools to notify you quickly. Here’s how to make your updates.
📅 School Board Meeting Schedule
You are welcome to join the Highline School Board and superintendent at a school board meeting. All school board meetings are held at the Central Office, 15675 Ambaum Boulevard SW in Burien, typically every other Wednesday, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 29. All regular board business meetings, work sessions and public hearings are public, and everyone is encouraged to attend.
🍏 What’s Cooking Next Week for School Meals
Next week, we look forward to teriyaki beef dippers with brown rice on the elementary lunch menu. School meals are available to all students at no cost this school year. Check out school menus online every Friday (that’s today!) for the following week.
