Internet & Device Access
We do not have a timeline for when internet will be available and when staff will be allowed to use their district-provided devices.
Today you may notice the district WiFi is turned on. Do not connect your personal device to it.
Work Device Use
Through our investigation into this week’s incident, we have found some staff are using their district-issued devices. This is adding additional complications to our investigation slowing our ability to restore services. Do not use your district laptops or desktops until further notice. Do not attach or remove flash drives on your district-issue laptop or desktop.
Our Digital Transformation team needs to remotely install software onto district-issued laptops and desktops that are located on site. Installing this software will help us continue the investigation. To support this work, if your district device is on site, please plug it in and turn it on. Do not login. Laptops and desktops must remain on and not in sleep mode for at least 15 minutes for this software to install. The WiFi is turned on so this process can run.
Personal Device Use
We do not expect or encourage staff to use their personal devices to conduct work, including laptops and mobile devices. However, while work devices are not accessible, we recognize some staff will choose to use their personal devices to access email and conduct work. For this reason, we are sharing the following information.
Highline is not responsible for any damage to personal devices or repairs needed on personal devices. Highline will not provide technology support for personal devices. Highline will not pay for or reimburse for data usage or cost associated with personal devices.
If you choose to use a personal laptop or desktop, we strongly encourage you to do all work on a thumb drive and to not save anything locally on your device. This will protect you from being required to turn over your personal device if there is a public records request involving any material you produce.
If you choose to use your personal mobile device or laptop to access email through Office 365 (Outlook), this correspondence is retained centrally and therefore does not need a thumb drive.
Records Retention
As a reminder, as a public-school employee, you are required to retain all materials you create. This includes but is not limited to emails, document files, video, photos, written notes, lessons, plans, etc. Due to the current landscape, you are likely creating a lot of paper material. Our recommendation is to file all of these materials in an easily accessible way so if you are asked to submit items for a public records request, you can easily do so.
