We want to make sure you are aware of the opportunities in our Waskowitz Environmental Leadership & Service (WELS) program.
WELS is a project-based program that offers an interdisciplinary, small learning community with a focus of environmental stewardship, leadership and community service. WELS students are active members of their learning community and serve as role models for sixth-grade students while at Camp Waskowitz. This program is located at Tyee High School.
Any 10th or 11th grade student across Highline Public Schools has an opportunity to join WELS starting next year.

The WELS Philosophy
In the midst of a climate crisis and following a global pandemic, the WELS program aims to prepare its students with the tools necessary to become stewards of our Earth, to feel empowered to take action on environmental issues, and to speak out about environmental injustices. Education is power and WELS students support and guide their community, especially young students, in building scientific literacy.
A School of Choice
WELS is a program that is part of our Schools of Choice. Choice schools and programs offer alternative options, each with their own specialized focus. Each school or program provides you with unique opportunities to develop skills and explore interests in the environment that’s right for you. Transportation within the district will be available in the 2023-24 school year.
Schools of Choice require an application. The application window for the 2023-24 school year closes January 31 at 11:00 p.m. Learn more about our Schools of Choice, including the enrollment process and timeline.
