New in ‘19: Check for School & Boundary Changes

2 Schools Open, 1 School Relocates, Boundaries Change & 6th Grade Moves Up

Highline Public Schools has changed school boundaries and feeder patterns for fall 2019. Go to highlineschools.org/boundaries and use our online tool to look up your fall 2019 neighborhood schools.

Why?

Boundary changes are necessary because we are opening a new middle school and a new elementary school in fall 2019. Voters overwhelmingly approved our 2016 school bond to replace aging facilities and give us room for lower class sizes in kindergarten through third grade.

Who decided?

The boundary changes were recommended by the community-led Capital Facilities Advisory Committee after multiple opportunities for community input. The school board approved boundary changes in June 2018.

What happens in fall 2019?

  1. School boundaries and feeder patterns change.

  2. Our fifth middle school, Glacier Middle School, opens in SeaTac.

  3. A new, larger Des Moines Elementary School opens at the Zenith Park site.

  4. Highline High School students start attending school at the Olympic Interim site. They will be there two years, while a new HHS is constructed.

  5. Students starting sixth and seventh grades move up to middle school together. A three-year middle school experience means more academic and extra-curricular opportunities for our sixth-grade students, including world language and arts, plus Camp Waskowitz.

We mailed notices November 29

We mailed an important notice last week to the families of Highline students living in areas where school boundaries or feeder pattern are changing.

  • Advice on supporting students with school changes

We understand boundary adjustments can be difficult for students who have to change schools. Children take cues from the adults who care about them. You can ease the transition for students by being positive and expressing confidence in their ability to adapt to a new school.

Our staff puts a priority on strong relationships with students and families. We invite you to visit your fall 2019 school(s) and get connected this year. We will provide information about meetings and school tours starting in January.
