Superintendent Message: We Are Highline!

Please read this message from Superintendent Susan Enfield about the 2019-20 school year and a preview of next school year.

Susan Enfield

Dear Highline Community,

While it may not feel like it, today is officially the last day of the 2019-20 school year. And what a school year it has been. I know the past few months have been challenging for us all, but together we have persevered, and I want to take a moment to thank you.

To our incredible staff—from nutrition services to teachers to social workers and central office and school leaders—thank you for stepping up to do whatever needed to be done. Many of you took on additional responsibilities without even being asked. It is this collaborative, can-do spirit that makes me so incredibly proud and fortunate to work alongside you.

To our families and community members, thank you for your patience, partnership and support as we quickly navigated our way through a new way of teaching our students. It has not always been smooth, but you have consistently let us know what was working for you and what you needed us to do differently—and you did so with tremendous grace and understanding.

To our students, thank you for not giving up! I know that not being with your friends and teachers at school was so hard, but you did your best to stay connected and keep learning. You inspire and motivate us all, and I could not be more proud of you.

And finally to our graduates, thank you for finishing the year strong and helping to make our drive-through commencement ceremonies so incredibly fun and joyful. We all loved celebrating you and all you have accomplished, and now we cannot wait to see the future you forge for yourselves. You will always be a proud part of #OurHighlineStory.

I know that you are all eager to know what school will look like in the fall. We have been, and will continue to be, working with the state superintendent’s office, Public Health and other districts across our region and state to identify how we can bring students back into our school buildings safely. Based on what we know today, we are not planning for a full return in the fall. We are working on various models that would allow us to bring groups of students into schools  on different days of the week and support them through online learning on the other days. We anticipate having a draft plan to share within the next two weeks and will hold three webinars on July 1 to hear your ideas on what works and what doesn’t, so that we can bring a final plan forward to the board later in July.

We will continue problem-solving and communicating throughout the summer so that we are prepared for a strong start to the 2020-21 school year, even though it will look and feel different than before. This I do know for sure: if any school system and community can figure this out together it is Highline.

Until I see you again, please stay safe, strong and healthy.

Susan
