Teacher of the Year Leads with Heart

Teacher of the Year Leads with Heart

What started off as a simple check-in with a few of students has turned into a movement at Chinook Middle School.

Several years ago, Reid Sundblad and his teaching colleagues were analyzing data to find out what was working and what was not. They noticed something about the school’s Latino male students—they had lower attendance rates and higher numbers of office discipline referrals.

"As a young teacher at that time, Reid was ignited by the team’s discussion to take action. He started a small after-school club called Los Siete. This club builds momentum and strength each year, promoting leadership, mentorship, community involvement, kindness and a commitment to academics," said Principal Karin Jones.

The group started with seven students and seven principles: respect, courageous leadership, trust, academic responsibility, equality, loyalty and honesty. The students met with Reid regularly and spoke often about how each student was living out the seven principles.

"We noticed that referral data started going down for these boys so I said I want to keep doing this but I don't want to just limit it to seven," said Reid.

Today, hundreds of students have been impacted by Reid's mentorship and the Los Siete program. Many who have graduated from the program and moved on to high school come back to support current Los Siete members. This is just one of many reasons why Reid is our Oustanding Teacher of the Year.
