Tragedy in Texas

Tragedy in Texas

Hello Highline,

Words are inadequate to convey the heartbreak and anger I feel following the senseless loss of life in Uvalde, Texas yesterday. I know you are feeling it, too.

I cannot fathom the depth of grief that is washing over the school community of Robb Elementary School at the death of these 19 young innocent children and two adults who cared for them.

In Highline, as in school districts across this nation, we do everything in our power to keep our students and the adults who serve them as safe as we can. We have school safety protocols, detailed action plans for emergencies and strong relationships with law enforcement.

Yet no school is a fortress, and preventing school shootings is not possible by schools acting alone. These tragic acts do not materialize in a moment. We must all reflect on what we can do to interrupt the fateful circumstances that lead up to them.

As a community and as a nation, we can and must do better. We must invest in mental health support for our teenagers and young adults who are feeling lost, angry and hopeless. We must provide economic opportunities for young people that give them financial security and hope for the future. We must transcend our political differences to enact common-sense laws that most people in the U.S. support.

If we fail to act, we should not be shocked when another school shooting occurs, and we will have no one to blame but ourselves. Let’s come together and do what needs to be done, for the sake of today’s children and generations of children to come.
