New Tyee Opens in September 2025

Our construction teams are making exciting progress at the site of the new Tyee High School in SeaTac. The project remains within budget and on target to open for school in September 2025, with staff move-in slated for next August.

To date, $1.4 million in priority hire wages has been earned on this project, with over 27,000 priority hire hours logged in by workers from economically distressed local and regional zip codes.

Priority hiring is tracked under our grant-funded King County community workforce agreement (CWA). A CWA is intended to move the needle on hiring minority- and women-owned businesses (MWBE), as well as workers from economically distressed zip codes.  Absher Construction, the general contractor, and its crews report their monthly employment data as part of the King County Community Workforce Agreement. A consultant works to help recruit from priority hire populations and verify data.

Priority hire apprentice participation is now at 4.2 percent, exceeding the 3 percent goal. Women’s participation in the workforce has risen to 4 percent, above the national average of 2.8 percent. Participation on the Tyee job site workforce by women and people of color is trending up over the last several months.

Project Progress

  • Structural steel work for the new Tyee High School is nearly complete, with the final metal deck installation scheduled to begin this past week.

  • Roof decking work is ongoing.

  • Interior work continues. Drywall installation is beginning on the first floor of the classroom wing, marking a key milestone in interior work. The three-story classroom building, and the administration wing now have roofs, windows, doors and exterior walls installed, so interior work, such as electrical, plumbing, and drywall, can begin without the risk from the weather.

  • Exterior site work continues, including stormwater systems and the installation of geothermal wells in the field to support a geothermal loop system for heating and cooling.

  • Light pole bases and sidewalk work are progressing, and site work is extending towards the neighboring Chinook Middle School.
