As students settle in and begin class, a song plays—sometimes in different languages, always in the spirit of celebration. It signals the start of a short warm-up activity that gets students ready to learn.
Calvin Allan teaches at Highline Virtual Academy, where students learn online and meet in person for support and community-building.
In person, he creates a cozy, student-centered space with plants and color. Online, he brings that same intentionality—welcoming students with check-ins, uses virtual tools for interaction, and sets the tone with entry songs that spark curiosity and joy.
Across both settings, Calvin fosters a culture of belonging, ensuring all students are welcomed, valued and safe.
“I try to create the classroom I wish I had,” Calvin says.
That’s why the Highline Schools Foundation named Calvin this year’s Gold Star Teacher of the Year. He is a living example of Highline’s Promise: that every student is known by name, strength and need, and graduates prepared for the future they choose.
