Why Attendance Matters

Why Attendance Matters
A McMicken Heights teacher gives a student a high five.

Help your child succeed in school—build the habit of good attendance early. Good attendance will help children do well in high school, college and career.

Students can suffer academically if they miss 10% of the school year or about 18 days. That's just one day every two weeks. Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves.

Research shows missing 2-3 days a month can result in:

  • Third-grade students falling behind in reading
  • Sixth-grade students failing courses
  • Teens dropping out of high school

Attendance Tips for Families:

  • Make sure your child keeps a regular bedtime and establishes a morning routine so they are rested and alert when they get to school.
  • Turn off all electronics including TVs, phones and tablets at bedtime.
  • Get clothes and backpacks ready the night before.
  • Check with your school nurse or office staff if you are not sure about when to keep your child at home due to illness
  • Avoid scheduling vacations or doctor’s appointments when school is in session.
  • Talk to teachers and counselors for advice if your student feels anxious about going to school.
  • Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, neighbor or another parent to take your student to school.
  • Track your student's attendance through our Parent Portal.

Let your school know how they can best support you and your student so that they can show up for school every day on time.
