Elementary Highly Capable

The Kindergarten/1st grade Group Learning Plan is designed for students who have the potential for benefitting from highly capable services demonstrated through specific academic achievement and/or exceptional creativity. 

Identification for the K/1 Group Learning Plan is based on teacher observation and classroom assessments. Students in kindergarten and 1st grade who are identified for highly capable services will receive these services in the student’s home classroom with teachers providing differentiated instruction targeting specific literacy and/or math goals.  

Identified students in kindergarten and 1st grade are eligible for the current school year only. The student will need to go through the identification process to be eligible for future services. 

Highly Capable Learning Plan 
Students identified as Highly Capable will develop a Highly Capable Learning Plan (HCLP). The plan helps students reflect on their strengths, set meaningful academic and interest-based goals, and monitor their growth throughout the school year. 

The HCLP onboarding process begins in the fall. Each student works with their teacher to create goals which are reviewed during the November conference. This meeting gives the student, family, and teacher an opportunity to discuss progress and identify next steps together. 

Digital Learning Platform 
Highline uses a secure digital platform to support the HCLP process. Students can record their goals, reflect on their learning, create a personalized learner profile, and explore lessons connected to their interests and a Gifted and Talented playlist. 

These activities help students better understand their strengths, interests, and learning preferences. They also encourage students to consider how this self-awareness can support their experiences at school and beyond. 

Home–School Partnership 
Families are encouraged to connect with their child’s teacher throughout the year to discuss the student’s learning journey. Ongoing communication helps teachers and families work together to provide the support, encouragement, and challenge each student needs to thrive.
