Summer School

Highline’s summer school programs are an opportunity for students to make up credits, transition smoothly into new schools, and keep their minds active during summer break. Learn more about programming by grade level. 

Elementary School

Elementary Summer Scholars provides an opportunity for your student to practice and build upon their literacy skills, as well as engage in STEM enrichment.

Program Overview

Students entering grade 4 in the fall are invited to participate in the Elementary Summer Scholars program. Students will be admitted based upon academic needs. This program is intended to provide extra support to students who are or have been below grade level. Daily attendance is expected and imperative to the success of the students.

Curriculum & Instruction

The primary focus of the Summer Scholars Program is reading and writing with a secondary focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) enrichment activities. This year, students will have over 120 minutes of literacy-based instruction daily and 45 minutes of enrichment activities as well as recess. Students will work with certificated teachers and paraeducators over the course of the 5-week program. 

2018 Dates

July 2 – August 2 (No school on July 4)
Monday – Thursday
8:15 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., including breakfast and lunch

Locations

  • North:  Shorewood Elementary
  • South:  Marvista Elementary

Registration

Applications may be received from the student's teacher after March 16th and must be submitted by May 18.  Late registrations will not be accepted, so be sure to apply early.  Families will be notified of placement and site location by early June.

Transportation

Indicate your student’s transportation preference on the application form. District school bus transportation is available (following district transportation guidelines). Any changes to your transportation request must be received by June 1.

Middle School

Middle School Summer Session provides an opportunity for your student to practice and build upon their language arts and math skills, as well as engage in college-and-career readiness enrichment activities.

Students entering grades 7 and 8 in the fall are invited to participate in the Middle School Summer Scholars program. Students will be admitted based upon academic needs. This program is intended to provide extra support to students who are or have been below grade level. Daily attendance is expected and imperative to the success of the students.

Curriculum & Instruction

The primary focus of the Summer Scholars Program is language arts, math and college-and-career readiness. All students who participate in Summer Session attend weekly field trips. Field trips relate to the classes students take. All students will also participate in a college visit. These field trips inspire students and connect their experiences to their future and to the world.

2018 Dates

July 16 – August 3
Monday – Friday
9:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Your student must attend the entire three weeks.

Food Services

Breakfast and lunch are served daily. All students under the age of 18, whether enrolled in the Highline Public Schools Summer Session Program or not, are welcome to eat at the school every day.

Transportation

Indicate your student’s transportation preference on the application form. District school bus transportation is available (following district transportation guidelines). Any changes to your transportation request must be received by June 1.  If you select school bus transportation, families will be notified by letter from the Transportation Department of bus stop information after June 20.

Registration Process 

Applications will be available soon. Highline Public Schools will notify families of placement into the program and site location by early June.

High School

Highline Public Schools is offering a variety of opportunities for High School summer learning. Classroom-based and online courses are available to current Highline students in grades 9-12 who are behind in graduation requirements. 

High School Summer Scholars

In credit retrieval courses, students may earn up to 1.0 credit (2 classes, each 0.5 credit) for classes they have taken and not passed. 

Fees $50 for each 0.5 credit ($100 for 1.0 credit); Free and reduced lunch fee: $25 for each 0.5 credit ($50 for 1.0 credit)

High School Summer Scholars

Highline Community College Credit Recovery (Monday-Thursday at HCC)

Class of 2018 students who are within 1.0 credit of graduating will attend Summer Scholars at Highline Community College.  Students may choose up to two courses during registration.  Designed as a full-day college experience, meals and transportation options are included

High School ELL Academy Summer Scholars

Currently enrolled high school and incoming 9th grade ELL students for Fall, 2018 may register for courses and receive additional support in English/Language Arts, Social Studies, and Math/Science elective credits required for graduation. These courses are all classroom-based instruction.

8:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. (1.0 credit) 

Registration

Registration for both programs closed on Friday, June 15.  There are no waitlists for courses.  Students may seek registration as a walk-in at Mount Rainier High School on Friday, July 6.  Walk-in enrollment will be based on course availability.

Course schedules for currently registered students will be distributed on July 2 at Mount Rainier High School. Please attend the welcome event to check-in and receive your schedule.
