Paraeducator Relies on Tech to Engage Preschool Students

What Does Distance Learning Look Like in Preschool?

Paraeducator Christi Dickerhofe helps teach preschool students online.

Technology + Team Effort

Teaching preschool students with special needs requires training, talent and heart in the classroom, let alone remotely.

Paraeducator Christi Dickerhofe supports students with special needs in a developmental preschool class at Mount View Elementary School. Her classroom team is led by teacher Andrew Miclat and includes two other paraeducators, Kulwant (Kelly) Kaur and Malyca Year.

"Every day I'm happy to be spending time connecting with our littlest learners in any way possible--even from my home office. It's a team effort," Christi says.

Paraeducators Support Teachers and Learners

"We help by monitoring microphones and orchestrating views and transitions from a few different screens, so that our teacher can focus on keeping the kids engaged. Thanks to the i-pads our students received, many quickly learned how to use the touch screen so that we can go into break-out rooms and lead small group activities like Play Doh, fine motor skills and art projects.

With adult guidance, our preschool students are using the SeeSaw learning platform to complete lessons on their own. It's a fun bonus to be able to leave voice recorded feedback for students to hear. I hope this helps them feel more connected.

I know that it's not easy for families at home OR for the teachers who are working SO hard to make distance learning successful. Though nothing can compare to in-person learning, I've been impressed with our students' resilience, and how they and their families have adapted to this new situation.

It's just so good to see those little wiggly faces every day and know that our work as paraeducators is a valued support for our teachers, students, and families during these crazy times."

Thank you!

THANK YOU to our paraeducators who are supporting our students, teachers and families in ways they never imagined! #ourhighlinestory

Tech Levy Supports Teachers & Paraeducators

Prop. 1, our technology levy will fund 1,500 new devices for teachers, if approved. This will enable us to upgrade aging laptops and desktops still in use by teachers and paraeducators.
