Bilingual Teaching Fellows Celebrate & Welcome 3rd Cohort

Highline’s second cohort of Bilingual Teaching Fellows (BTF) graduated this spring. The 14 new teachers were celebrated in a virtual event on June 8.

BTF supports paraprofessionals with bilingual skills in Highline to become certificated teachers with an elementary education endorsement.

This week's event recognized Cohort 2’s graduation and was a welcome to the new group of future bilingual teachers in Cohort 3.  The teachers in Cohort 1 helped coordinate the virtual event.

“These new teachers demonstrated resilience and flexibility in completing their program during the pandemic, adopting to provide distance instruction with their schools, and finishing their programs strong,” said Bernard Koontz, executive director of Teaching, Learning & Leadership.

Fellows study over two years while working full time in paraprofessional roles. Through their work as paraprofessionals, they practice and deepen their study. Fellows graduate with a teaching certificate and bachelor’s degree from Western Washington University’s Woodring College of Education.

“We look forward to seeing our bilingual teaching fellows step in classrooms in a few short months. We are excited to welcome our third cohort of bilingual teaching fellows now.”
