Levy Impacts: Athletics

From the court to the classroom, ASB President Richy Ramirez is wrapping up his senior year at Evergreen High School with purpose and pride. As a student-athlete in basketball and track, Richy says sports helped him grow as a leader, develop discipline and form lasting relationships.

“Participation in sports has heavily impacted me by helping me develop social skills and strong character,” he said. “I've made many friends, learned the importance of teamwork and built leadership [skills].”

That leadership showed up on the court and track, and across campus — where Richy serves as president of the Associated Student Body (ASB). He says sports gave him the confidence and skills that helped him lead his peers.

Richy’s growth didn’t happen by accident. Behind every practice, every meet, and every win or loss were mentors who made it possible, like Coach Peter Ho and Coach Justin Cox.

“They live by three words: Dedication, Desire and Discipline,” Richy said. “These words have stuck with me far beyond the gym because they apply to life as much as they do basketball.”

Both coaches are alumni of Evergreen, which Richy says adds another level of connection. “They understand what it's like to walk in our shoes. They don't just coach, they relate — and that's made all the difference.”

These coaches and the programs they lead are possible thanks in part to the Highline Education Levy, approved by voters in 2021. While the state covers a portion of public-school costs, the levy helps fund many essential staff and services in our schools — from paraeducators and teachers to after-school programs, Camp Waskowitz, counselors, coach stipends and more.

“Sports continue to motivate me to strive for success on and off the field,” said Richy. “It's shaped how I approach challenges in all areas of my life.”

Richy will graduate in June and plans to attend Seattle Pacific University to study music production. His dream? To one day host his own music festivals.

We’re proud of students like Richy and deeply grateful to our voters. Thank you for continuing to invest in our students’ learning, leadership and well-being — in and out of the classroom.
