Running a school district involves many day-to-day costs that the state does not fully fund — such as school bus transportation, classroom supplies, technology and utilities. The state also does not fund extra-curricular activities like athletics.
Levy dollars help fill this funding gap. For example, the state provides funding for some transportation services, but not enough to cover the actual cost of buses, drivers, fuel and maintenance. The same goes for safety and security staff, social workers and counselors.
Levies make up about 15% of Highline’s total budget.
Highline’s Educational Programs and Operations Levy is on the November 4 ballot. This is not a new tax. It is a renewal of a levy that is going to expire in 2026.
