Hilltop Student Engages in P.E. Thanks to Device + Hotspot

P.E. continues--just differently for now. Hilltop Elementary student Dionne Johnson participates in P.E. via Zoom with his class and P.E. teacher.

Dionne’s mom, Jessica Johnson, has mixed feelings about Distance Learning. “I definitely prefer school in-person. That would engage him better. But, it’s a give and take. The [COVID-19] numbers are still pretty high. His Dad and I are not ready to send him back in person.”

“For the most part, I think he’s grasping what they’re teaching so far. He has good days, and then some days when he’s just not as into it,” she said.

“The school provided pretty much what he needed, including the laptop, hotspot and a whiteboard. It’s nice he has his internet access. If we have to go somewhere, we can bring it, and he can still continue on with his work. A bigger monitor would be a big help, so he could see both the faces and the lesson.”

She says it is helpful when Dionne’s teacher breaks the class into small groups for some work. It is challenging for Jessica to help explain some things when he has questions. She appreciates that his teacher plans one-on-one time with students, but it is still hard to save questions for his weekly check-in.

Did you know that Proposition 1, the Highline technology levy, ensures internet access for students, either with broadband or via hotspots, depending on needs, if voters approve the levy on November 3? The levy would upgrade technology access and increase digital equity for our students. Get informed at

Remember to vote in this fall’s elections. Did you know that you can register to vote in Washington up until November 3 if you do so in person? Learn how to register or vote in person.
