Teacher Voice: Going Back to School Safely

When students arrived for the first day of hybrid learning on March 11, they were greeted in person by their teacher for the first time in exactly a year.

Students and staff wear masks, wash and sanitize hands frequently, and stay at a distance as much as possible. While these routines are new, being together in person instantly made students more engaged.

"One thing that has surprised me is I forgot how much I enjoy hearing laughter. Seeing the laughter and the joy. For the last year, I've taught to a black screen. Most of the students don't put their cameras on. Now, to be able to teach and hear that interaction immediately has been wonderful," says Linda Lambert, a special education teacher at Tyee High School.

Before coming back to school to teach, Ms. Lambert reviewed every detail of the school safety plan. She is thankful for everyone in her school working together to put safety first.
