Happy First Day of School! 

Welcome back, Highline! The first day carries so much promise. Hallways fill with laughter. Classrooms open to possibility. Educators and staff welcome each student by name, strength and need. Together, we begin a year of learning, belonging and supporting every student for the future they choose. 

As we kick off the school year, Superintendent Dr. Ivan Duran shares a personal reflection, as both a leader at Highline and a Highline parent. He shares what this moment means to him and how it strengthens our shared promise.

Welcome back, Highline!   

As both your superintendent and the parent of a first grader, I bring a unique perspective into this school year. Watching my son on his learning journey reminds me what every family hopes for: that their child will be known, supported and encouraged as they grow. These experiences have deepened my understanding of what it means to entrust your child to our schools each day.  

Our Highline Promise is that every student is known by name, strength and need, and graduates prepared for the future they choose. That promise is more than words—it is a living commitment to every family and child.   

In Highline, we stand firm in our values of equity and belonging. We welcome every student—no matter their background, language or identity—and see the diversity they bring as one of our greatest strengths. We are unwavering in our commitment to create schools where all students, families and staff are welcome, valued and safe.  

This work is not something schools do alone—it takes all of us. Students thrive when families, educators and community partners work side by side. Together, we can support our students through challenges, celebrate their growth, and prepare them for bright futures filled with purpose.
