PE5900: Outdoor Recreation Backpack and Fitness

Course Description

Adventure and fitness while exploring the Pacific Northwest! Part of the WELS curriculum includes hiking and a backcountry experience. This course will provide you with the opportunity to learn how to experience the outdoors with minimal impact on the environment through hiking and backcountry travel. The focus of this class is to develop and enhance skills and knowledge necessary to travel safely and respectfully on the many outdoor recreational areas of Western Washington. The emphasis is developing the fundamentals of hiking and the 10 essentials for backcountry travel. Students develop skills for participation in a lifelong recreational pursuit; enhancing their fitness through recreational hiking and backpacking. Participants will gain confidence and skills in pursuit of outdoor adventure.

Essential Standards

Standard 1: Students will demonstrate competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns.

    • Refine activity-specific movement skills in two or more games and sports (invasion, net/wall, field/striking, target).PE1.1.HS2

Standard 2: Students will apply knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics related to movement and performance.
