Schools of Choice lottery results now live on ParentVUE.

General Lottery & Waitlist Process

Highline’s Schools and Programs of Choice applications will be included in a lottery to ensure equitable access and placement into schools with limited space.

Lottery Process

Completed applications submitted by January 31 will be included in an initial lottery in March.

If there are more applicants than seats at a school, the system will prioritize students to determine who is assigned. While some schools have a variation, most schools follow a standard set of priorities.
Depending on the school, priorities include:

  • Students residing within Highline Public Schools.
  • Children of full-time staff members at the school where the student is applying.
  • Students with a sibling currently attending the school where the student is applying.

The system’s algorithm will consider application responses including school preference order, age/grade, and school capacity (open seats available). The lottery is set up so that students may receive more than one offer. The lottery algorithm will try to respond to preference order as indicated in the application.

Results

Lottery results will include either an offer of acceptance or a waitlist number. Students that are offered a seat will have time to finalize their decision. Students that are waitlisted will be placed in the order that they are chosen from the pool of remaining students. As students begin finalizing their selections, schools will begin offering available seats to waitlisted students as movement occurs.

Schools will reopen their application and continue to be accept students on their waitlist on a rolling basis throughout the year.

FINALIZING YOUR PLACEMENT

Lottery results will include either an offer of acceptance or a waitlist number. If your student receives an offer, you must accept or decline by April 3, 2026. Accepting an offer removes your student from all other Schools and Programs of Choice offers and waitlists. If you do not respond by the deadline, the offer of acceptance will expire.

As students begin finalizing their selections, schools will begin offering available seats to waitlisted students. If there is movement, waitlisted students can anticipate hearing from schools starting April 13, 2026, but may hear earlier.
