Seal of Biliteracy

How to Earn the Seal of Biliteracy 

Washington State’s Seal of Biliteracy is awarded to graduating seniors who have attained a high level of proficiency in English and another language. 

Step 1: Meet English Language
Arts Graduation Requirements 

 

Step 2: Demonstrate Proficiency in Another Language 

 

Students must meet Washington State graduation requirements in English
Language Arts (ELA). 

 

Students may qualify through one of the pathways below: 

Option A: World Language Credit by Proficiency Exam 

  • Earn an overall proficiency level of Intermediate Mid or higher 

Option B: AP Language Exam 

  • Score 3 or higher on an AP language exam 

Option C: IB Language Exam 

  • Earn a qualifying score on an IB language exam. 

New for the Class of 2027: Advanced Seal of Biliteracy 

 

The Advanced Seal of Biliteracy recognizes students demonstrating exceptionally high levels of multilingual proficiency. 

Students may earn the Advanced Seal of Biliteracy by: 

Demonstrating Advanced Low proficiency on an approved assessment.  

OR 

Earning the Seal of Biliteracy with an overall proficiency level of Intermediate Mid in two or more languages. 

How Students Are Recognized 

  • Notation on student’s transcript 
  • Medallion at graduation 
  • Certificate of achievement
