New Buildings Rise

A tall crane towers over the Evergreen High School construction site as the structures of the new buildings rise from the ground.

Project Update

In November, construction crews operated the giant mobile crane to lift and place structural steel braces up to the second of three floors for the classroom building (pictured on the right).

Crews poured the slab-on-grade concrete floor for the administration section of the main building (left). The concrete masonry walls of the gyms are approaching 40 feet high and continue to climb (center).

In December, they began using the crane to install mass timber — engineered wood panels, columns and beams that will form the load-bearing floors, walls and roof of the classroom building. Mass timber has similar strength ratings to concrete or steel, but weighs a lot less.

By January 3, some structural steel braces had risen to three stories high in the classroom building.

Temporary power from Seattle City Light has been installed to serve the Evergreen Aquatic Center and the athletic field lights. Puget Sound Energy plans to install natural gas lines mid-month.

Permitting

Various permits and approvals are in process. We are waiting for the building permit to be issued by King County, which is critical at this point in the project. Several PICA (Pre-Issuance Construction Authorizations) have been issued to stay on track with the project schedule.

What’s Next?

Overhead mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems rough-in will start next, as well as constructing the priority walls needed to accommodate other systems.

Schedule & Budget Status

The Evergreen High School replacement project is on schedule and within budget.

We expect the new school to be ready for occupancy in August 2025. Following a move to the new building, the old buildings will be demolished, and new baseball and softball fields will be completed by August 2026.
