We are preparing students for a world that is very different from the one we entered as young adults. Think about how much change there has been in the ways we work, communicate, and access information. If we are going to truly prepare our students for their future, schools also need to evolve.
This year our secondary schools are engaging in a process to think critically about how we will make progress toward our new strategic plan goals:
- Culture of Belonging: A culture where all are welcome, valued, and safe.
- Innovative Learning: Academic experiences that engage, empower, and challenge every student.
- Bilingual & Biliterate: Multicultural skills that enable students to live, work, and communicate across cultures.
- Future Ready: Students explore possibilities and develop mindsets that prepare them for a changing future.
This process will center the voices of our students, families and school community. We will have opportunities to listen to students and families to hear their perspectives about what secondary school could and should be so that all students are successful.
All of Highline’s comprehensive high schools and middle schools will be collaborating with an organization called Transcend Education to support each school in this process. Transcend is a national nonprofit that supports school communities to create equitable learning environments. We are referring to this work as “secondary redesign.”
This week, Transcend staff visited our four comprehensive high schools to learn about their work and school communities. Transcend staff also led professional develop for some of our secondary school leaders on Thursday, October 19.
The Secondary Redesign plan for the 2023-24 school year includes three cohorts, each with specific expectations and support from Transcend:
Cohort 1: Comprehensive High Schools
Schools in Cohort 1 will receive intense, individualized weekly coaching and support with Transcend. Their goal is to engage students and families this winter and spring. The ideas generated will be piloted this spring and next school year, with a goal of implementing changes schoolwide in fall 2025.
Cohort 2: Middle Schools and CHOICE Academy
Cohort 2’s participation is divided into two phases. Phase 1 focuses on producing a Case for Change and a Journey Plan, running from September to February. Phase 2, from March to June, allows schools to either begin piloting their designs or continue preparing activities.
Cohort 3: Secondary Schools of Choice
Cohort 3’s participation includes sharing products and resources, self-paced learning experiences, and attending the Community Innovation Showcase.
More information will be shared in Highline Insider on secondary redesign over the next several months.
