Southern Heights Shines in Farewell Celebration

Southern Heights Shines in Farewell Celebration

At the farewell celebration for Southern Heights Elementary School on Saturday, May 21, so much love was expressed for the sense of community and care that families and staff have shared since the current school opened in 1955.

Former students, teachers and principals gathered to connect and reminisce in the sunshine before the school closes it doors at the end of this school year.

While not an easy decision by the school board, there are two main reasons for the closure of Southern Heights: the size of the school and the condition of the building, and it is not scheduled for replacement. This eliminates one school from our backlog of a dozen aging schools all built in the same time period. No plans have been made for its use at this time.

The playground will continue to be available to the community. Students are reassigned to other schools, primarily Cedarhurst and Beverly Park, where they will be welcomed this fall.
