Student photographer Nathalie Paradise caught the Des Moines Elementary School construction site humming on October 12. Structural steel was arriving. Columns and beams were going up, and concrete was curing. We went on this photo shoot with Nathalie, who is a Mount Rainier High School senior.
She is taking a news photography class at Highline College as part of Running Start. Absher Construction Company's Project Superintendent Joe Turner took her on a site tour. Photos without Nathalie in them are by Nathalie.
Interesting fact: Nathalie stays busy outside of school and college by volunteering as this year's leader of Shine Bright. Shine Bright is a totally student-run program that matches up high school mentors with more than 100 3rd-5th grade students in 7 Highline elementary schools.
The high school leaders work with the younger students to set goals and develop foundational skills to set them up for success in learning. Nathalie hopes to start a Shine Bright program at the new school when it opens next fall.
Enjoy her photos of the construction progress, as well as a few of her at work on site.
