New Des Moines School is 80% Complete + Driving & Walking Improvements

Project Update | Des Moines Elementary School

Construction of the new Des Moines Elementary School, at the Zenith Site, is 80% complete at the end of June 2019. Learn about improvements planned for walking paths and a new center turn lane on 16th Avenue South at the entrance to the new school. We expect the principal and front office staff to move in to the new school in early August.

Current Activities

Pedestrian & Transportation Improvements    

The project team met with representatives from the City of Des Moines to review the city plan for frontage improvements along 16th Avenue South. The improvements include:

  • A new center turn lane on 16th Avenue South at the entrance to the new school.  This will assist northbound drivers on 16th Avenue South with entering the school site.
  • A paved walking path along the west side of 16th Avenue South for the entire length of the school property and continuing to the South 240th St. intersection. The walking path is part of a  City of Des Moines trail extension project, extending the Barnes Creek Trail over Massey Creek. An understanding has been reached with the city related to constructing the trail.
  • A new sidewalk will also be added along South 240th Street (north side of street) from the 16th Avenue South intersection west to the school property line. The new sidewalk will  connect to an existing sidewalk that continues west.

Construction (started June 25, 2018)

  • Installation of mechanical and electrical fixtures is 50% completed.

  • Nearly all window have been installed.

  • Chiller, electrical switchgear and generator are in place. Permanent power and distribution panels are have been turned on.

  • Sod is installed on the athletic field.

  • Sheetrock, tape and paint throughout the building is nearly completed.

  • Resilient flooring is 40% installed.

  • Carpeting is 15% completed.

  • Cabinets and finishes are 85% completed.

  • Paving, striping and other right-of-way work has begun.

  • Landscaping will start soon.


  • We are on schedule to reach substantial completion in early August. This includes seven approved weather-related delay days. Construction is 80% completed. 

Original Budget: $55,323,210 

Current Budget: $57,782,961

Based on project report submitted by Vanir Construction Management. Vanir is the program manager for the four major bond projects.
