Portables to Replace Building B

Project InformationProject Update | Olympic Interim School

Project completion date now will be fall 2018, with the high school start at the Olympic Interim School moving from fall 2018 to fall 2019. Most of Building B will be demolished and replaced with new portable classrooms.

Current Activities

Construction Phase

Building A

  • Final abatement work is in progress and follows the roof completion schedule.
  • Roof replacement work on Building A is approximately 90% complete.

Building B

  • Abatement of hazardous materials will resume for demolition of Building B.
  • Selective abatement for re-occupation will proceed for the East Wing of Building B.
  • Removal of contaminated soil will begin by the end of February in the East Wing.

Building C

  • Abatement work and selective demolition will resume in Building C.
  • Roofing replacement work will start in late February as weather permits.

Project Planning

  • The project team is meeting weekly with the general contractor to discuss schedule and cost control.
  • The design team is updating documents to reflect the changes in the project scope.
  • The project team is working closely with the City of Des Moines for revised permitting requirements.
  • The phase 1 order of new portables should be delivered to the site in early March.

Project Issues

  • Project substantial completion moves from June 2018 to late Fall 2018.
  • The high school start date at the Olympic Interim School moves from Fall 2018 to Fall 2019.

Project Scope

  • Significant changes in scope have evolved. The magnitude of unforeseen conditions, particularly in Building B, has led the project team to recommend Building B for demolition. In its place, new portable classrooms will be placed in the footprint. Building C will be further renovated to accommodate administrative office space and services.
  • The new scope of work is formed around the demolition of Building B, which will include approximately 30,500 square feet of Building B, while retaining 9,500 square feet of the East Wing portion of the building. Building C will be renovated to accommodate the administrative space. Building A will be retained and minor scope will be added to accommodate input from the district's athletic directors. The project will add 27 portable classrooms, restrooms and associated walkways.
