Kaiser Grant

Highline Public Schools received a three year grant for 10 schools from Kaiser Permanente to establish stronger district support teams focused on mental health.

The grant work will include implementing and increasing behavioral/mental health supports and promoting student and staff wellness within our Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) structures. Behavioral/mental health supports will be tied to our Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS) and social-emotional learning practices. Highline will continue to partner with community-based service providers. The grant also funds staff and community health education and other supports for sustaining positive and emotionally intelligent school communities.

Rachel manages the work of the Kaiser Mental Health Grant. This includes leading the grant team in meeting the four goals of the grant: 1. Expand district and school capacity to deliver and sustain mental health services and supports through a Trauma-Informed framework. 2.Improve Mental Health awareness and promotion. 3. Reduce barriers to mental health engagement by strengthening community-school-family partnerships. 4.Expand organizational capacity to address staff mental health and wellness. She works with various stakeholders including district and school-based staff, community mental health partners, grant evaluators, Kaiser/Thriving Schools and others to achieve the outcomes of the grant.

Alyson

Alyson Paris, BSPH, MSW, LASWIC

Alyson serves as a School Mental Health Coordinator. Alyson is coming to Highline after most recently working on a Best Starts for Kids pilot program focused on providing support to youth and families with early intervention and crisis prevention in Riverview and Snoqualmie Valley School Districts. She has spent years embedded in the implementation of numerous innovative global health programs including the award-winning Cafe Reconcile, The People's Institute for Survival and Beyond, Covenant House of New Jersey, and Liberia's national community health worker program. These experiences have given her the expertise to engage leaders, funders, governmental officials, and stakeholders to drive locally created solutions. Alyson believes in the power of collaboration and working across silos to create meaningful and sustainable change. She studied Global and Community Health (BSPH) and Global Social Work (MSW) at Tulane University in New Orleans.

Candice Holder is a passionate voice on the issues facing young people and the communities in which we live. She is beyond excited to serve the community in which she lives in the capacity of a School Mental Health Coordinator. Candice attended Eastern Washington University for her undergraduate studies and WGU for studies in Education. She has worked in the public-school sector for the majority of her professional career in many capacities that have led her here. She has served as a Guidance Support Specialist, Special Education Teacher, and Equity Director and excited to bring previous experience and passions to the Highline School District to advocate for solutions that, in partnership, can positively transform our district.

Sophie De Haan, M. Ed., LMHC, MHP

Behavioral Health Systems Navigator

Sophie currently serves as the Behavioral Health Systems Navigator within the Highline School District, supporting the Kaiser Grant team to navigate how to effectively implement behavioral health within MTSS. She is also a licensed child, youth, and family counselor in a community mental health agency, and a mental health professional, holding a master’s in clinical Mental Health Counseling from Seattle University.  She enjoys crisis work, trauma processing work, and working with others to understand and navigate systems within mental health.

Cass Manalastas, MA, LMHCA

Cass is a licensed mental health counselor associate and drama therapist. Cass serves as a School Mental Health Coordinator. A graduate of Antioch University Seattle (MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Drama Therapy), Cass has worked with children, youth, and families in a community mental health setting by providing school-based mental health services and collaborating with school counselors, teachers, and staff to support students with mental health concerns. Cass also volunteers for youth-centered organizations in Seattle and Tacoma as a mental health support volunteer to help youth find their voice and use it for self-advocacy and self-care. Cass enjoys using strengths-based and creative approaches in working with these groups and integrating them with evidence-based strategies like cognitive-behavioral and solution-focused techniques, and believes that collaborating with youth is key to their success in whatever they choose to pursue.
