Here are a few pointers...

• Listen more, talk less. Ask questions. Be kind and calm. Avoid judgement, criticism and pressure. If you find yourself getting worked up, pause the conversation and come back later.
• Choose the setting wisely - young people are hyper-aware of their environment, talk with them privately, where other people cannot overhear or chime in.
• Make it a teachable moment, if that is what they are needing - ask them first! “can I share with you a few things I know about …”
