What Is Special Education?
Special education provides personalized support for students with disabilities so they can learn, grow, and take part in school alongside their peers. These supports are tailored to each student’s unique strengths, learning style, and goals.
Support is provided through something called an Individualized Education Program (IEP).
An IEP is a written plan that outlines:
- What the student is working on (academic, social, or life skills goals)
- How they will be supported (services, accommodations, and tools)
- Where learning will take place (general education, small group, or specialized settings)
- How progress will be measured
Every IEP is created by a team that includes the family, educators, and specialists—and often the student. Families are equal partners in shaping this plan, helping make sure it reflects who the student is and what they need to succeed.
Special education is not one-size-fits-all. It’s a flexible system designed to meet students where they are and support where they want to go.
