Mission

  • I am a Teacher. I am a Learner.
We are successful at Des Moines.

At Des Moines Elementary, we value each of the roles within our community. We view students, families, teachers, and staff as integral components to ongoing success. We see every member of our community as having something to offer, something to gain, and many ways to demonstrate success.

At Des Moines Elementary, we believe that every adult and every child is a TEACHER:
    - We all have talents, skills, and expertise to offer.
    - We all have unique perspectives to share.

At Des Moines Elementary, we believe that every adult and every child is a LEARNER:
    - We identify areas for development.
    - We honor mistakes as a step in the learning process.
    - We nurture curiosity.
    - We create a safe environment for transparent learning and risk taking.

At Des Moines Elementary, we believe that SUCCESS can be measured in many ways:
    - By progress toward standards, and also by growth.
    - As a group, and also as an individual.
    - By outcomes, and also by attitude.

    Dear Des Moines Elementary Families,

During the coming weeks, students in grades 3rd - 6th will be taking the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA).

The SBA is our state-required annual check-up on learning. It measures how well students and schools are performing on our state's learning standards.

Washington's learning standards define what students should know and be able to do by the end of each grade. Meeting the standards means students are prepared for success as they move forward, and, ultimately, that they are ready for college and career. Results show us where students may need extra help or more of a challenge.

You can help, as you do every day, by ensuring your student consistently gets enough sleep, eats breakfast, and is on time to school.

Between April 23rd – May 25th please avoid making appointments on the days specified below:

    • 6th Grade will be testing on Mondays
    • 5th Grade will be testing on Tuesdays
    • 4th Grade will be testing on Wednesdays
    • 3rd Grade will be testing on Thursdays

Students can take a practice test to get a feel for the test.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

    Thank you for your support,

    Rick Wisen,

    Des Moines Elementary Principal
