I am a Teacher. I am a Learner.
We are successful at Des Moines.

At Des Moines Elementary, we value each of the roles within our community. We view students, families, teachers, and staff as integral components to ongoing success. We see every member of our community as having something to offer, something to gain, and many ways to demonstrate success.

At Des Moines Elementary, we believe that every adult and every child is a TEACHER:
- We all have talents, skills, and expertise to offer.
- We all have unique perspectives to share.

At Des Moines Elementary, we believe that every adult and every child is a LEARNER:
- We identify areas for development.
- We honor mistakes as a step in the learning process.
- We nurture curiosity.
- We create a safe environment for transparent learning and risk taking.

At Des Moines Elementary, we believe that SUCCESS can be measured in many ways:
- By progress toward standards, and also by growth.
- As a group, and also as an individual.
- By outcomes, and also by attitude.

Dear Des Moines Parents and Families,

As spring appears, so does the time for end of the year assessments for 3rd through 6th grade students at Des Moines Elementary. This year, our students will again be taking the Smarter Balance Assessment Consortium (SBAC), along with 26 other states. The SBAC test has two major portions to the assessment. The computer adaptive test and the performance task, where students research a topic and then write an essay in response to a prompt.  These tasks are in-depth and analyze student writing along with their reading skills in correlation to the Common Core State Standards. One area that you can assist with at home is to have your student practice their typing skills to familiarize him or herself with the keyboard layout. Listed below are some free websites you can use at home:

                  Dance Mat Typing: http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/

                  Rapid Typing Zone: http://www.rapidtyping.com/

                  Typing Web: http://www.typingweb.com/

                  KeyBr.com: http://www.keybr.com/

Over the course of the next few weeks, school staff will be meeting to finalize the Smarter Balanced testing schedule for students in grades 3-6 for both mathematics and reading. Students in Grade 5 will also be taking the science MSP as well. As soon as it is completed, a schedule will be sent home, along with other important information. Look forward to this coming home soon!

Thank you for supporting our commitment to student achievement.

Best Regards,

Rick Wisen, Principal

  • Supporting Immigrant Students

We recognize that actions taken by the White House, including a new executive order restricting immigration and orders to increase immigration enforcement, are unsettling to many of our families. We want to reiterate our commitment to our students’ safety. We will do everything in our power to keep our students safe at school.

  • The Meaning of L-O-V-E

What does the word love mean? The world's greatest poets, authors, musicians, teachers, and philosophers have struggled with that question for centuries. For Valentine's Day, we asked the smartest and most thoughtful people we know-- our students.

  • Learn About School Schedule Decisions

Making a decision about weather-related school closures is always difficult, because so many different situations have to be considered. We do our very best to balance the many interests at stake, but we recognize that no matter what decision we make, it will not please everyone.
