Welcome to Literacy & Social Studies

  • We believe all students actively construct meaning in their lives, and the most effective way to support our students in becoming critical readers, writers, thinkers, and effective communicators is to provide a differentiated pathway to independent ownership of their learning experiences. Students will continuously develop their identities and skills as critical, informed, resourceful interpreters and creators of text.
A successful literacy plan rests on a strong foundation of diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments that enable teachers to maintain constant knowledge of where students are in their learning.
To achieve this goal, the literacy framework within Highline Public Schools is based on a comprehensive, balanced approach.

In addition to the literacy comprehensive, balanced approach, the HPS Social Studies frameworks layers in the inquiry arc.
