Dr. Gary W. Ballou

Do you remember the Disney movie "The Jungle Book"?  And, do you remember the big, friendly bear named "Baloo" who sang "The Bare Necessities" in the movie?  Click here for this song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dhSdnDb3tk.  That's how you pronounce my name...just like Baloo, the bear!  Won't that be easy to remember?  I look forward to learning your names, too!

Here is a little about what I do.  I see students in grades K-5 twice each week for a total of 45 minutes.  In addition, I direct the Shorewood Elementary School Choir, a group that has performed for the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field, the NCAA PAC 12 Women's Basketball Tournament at Key Arena, a Highline Bears baseball game and other local events.  In addition, two (2) of our choir students were selected by audition to be a part of the 2017 Washington All-State Elementary Choir.

Last year, I piloted the new national assessment in Music Education in one of our 2nd Grade Music classes.  The assessment was developed by the National Association for Music Education in partnership with Iowa State University.  I am happy to report that 98% of the students passed the national assessment in Music Education on the first try!

Besides teaching General Music and directing the choir, I also write music grants.  Thus far, I have received grant money from the Highline Schools Foundation, the University (UW) Women's Club, the Southeast King County Retired Principals' Association and a Highline Education Association grant.

Please feel free to stop by the Music Room at any time to say "Hello".  You are always welcome in my classroom.  I look forward to meeting you!
