Mural Artist Henry Luke By Henry Luke I am a 27 year old mural artist from Seattle, Washington who will be painting a large scale mural on the walls of Glacier Middle School. What first drew me to mural painting, seeing the sprawling colorful walls in San Francisco’s Mission District as a teenager, was the way they belong to the people. They have a great power to tell the stories of a community and represent its pride and identity in a bold, long lasting way. Murals can take the experience of people who don’t always have a voice in society, and portray them at incredible scale. I first started painting murals on small businesses in South Seattle, then went on to larger and larger walls, in many different neighborhoods and even different cities. Because I want my artwork to be a true expression of the community it’s intended to represent, I love to talk to the people who will be seeing each mural on a daily basis as I create the concept which will eventually turn into paint on the wall. It was exciting news when I learned that Glacier Middle School had selected me to create a piece of artwork for their brand new building, something that would be displayed in the school for decades to come. I am honored to take on this responsibility to tell something of the stories of the students, their families, and the community that they create together in this school. Middle School is an exciting time where people are figuring out who they are and what kind of person they want to be, what do they believe in, and how they want to be part of the world and their community. I hope the mural that I create can contain some of that journey that so many students are on, and also represent the place where those journeys started: the vibrant cultures and communities where students come from. I have been working with the amazing Glacier teachers and staff to have “meet the artist” sessions where I get to speak with students and gather their ideas, and will be working on other opportunities to do that. I am looking forward to hearing from the community and finally to add this piece of colorful artwork to the walls of Glacier Middle School. Get informed about Prop. 1, our Highline technology levy on fall election ballots and ask questions. Thanks to expiring school taxes, the 2-year $32.5 million tech levy will NOT increase the current tax rate. If Prop. 1 is approved, property owners would pay 67 cents per $1,000 assessed property value, a decrease or 12 cents per $1,000 from the current tax rate.
